I’m considering buying a house or apartment in Spain, but before I purchase anything I want to make sure that it’s as eco-friendly as possible. I really like the Spanish government’s attitude to the environment, and it’s that forward-thinking outlook that attracted me to Spain in the first place. I’m interested in green building methods, solar energy and how the property reduces its own carbon footprint. I’d prefer new build, as I’d like to be able to choose my own fixtures and fittings to really make it feel like home.

I am sick of this wet weather and have persuaded my husband that a villa in the Canaries would give us a great escape with the promise of sunshine all year round. I am fed up with the two-hour drive from my home to where I berth my yacht, and since I’ve recently become freelance I want to move somewhere with good weather and easy access to a marina. Spain is my first choice, as I need to be near an airport with good access to the UK because I’ll need to come back for work from time to time. However, I’m confused by the choice on offer and I’d like to get an idea of what kind of property is available around the country.
