Spain has the biggest pigeon loft in the world

25 January

The natural park La Brena and Marismas of Barbate is one of the least extensive in all of Andalusia. However, apart from having the highest cliff on the south coast of Spain, it also has the largest pigeon in the world.

This is the Brena’s pigeon loft, located in the town of Barbate, Cadiz. Experts estimate that at its peak, there were about 5,000 pairs nesting for the production of manure and meat. It also generated nitrate in its walls, a key element in the production of the gunpowder.

This authentic "flying factory” is no longer in use, but it offers the most instructive visit. Located in the Porquera’s  Farmhouse, it is a thick-walled construction, eleven feet high, with nests on both sides. Today there are nice rural hotels where you can stay while you visit La Brena and enjoy the local nature trails.
